Hurricane Preparedness

October 02, 2015     |     By

Are you prepared in case a hurricane or other natural disaster strikes? Here in Wilmington, NC we are prone to flooding, especially with the impending Hurricane Joaquin. Sensitive data stored in electronics are not immune to the effects of Mother Nature. Do you have a preparedness plan for yourself or your business?

Here are the essentials:

  • Backup - though that should be happening frequently, once more won't hurt
  • Shutdown everything you can (PCs, laptops, printers), with the exception of mission critical equipment like servers
  • Unplug as much as you can from the wall
  • Raise what you can a few inches off the ground (the higher the better)
  • Store your backup device safely away from other equipment or in a different location altogether
  • One added step for extra security is to wrap your equipment in plastic - AFTER IT IS SHUTDOWN AND COMPLETELY UNPLUGGED

It's better to be prepared and have to plug functioning equipment back in than lose thousands of hours of work or timeless, unreproducable memories. :)

If you have any questions or need any help in securing your electronics, call us 910-399-4898 or email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. and we'll be glad to help!

Encryption Viruses

July 09, 2015     |     By

Computer viruses are everywhere - chances are you've had a run-in yourself. The newest kind of viruses hitting hard are encryption viruses that attack your most valuable data and hold it "hostage" until you pay an obscene amount of money in bitcoin currency. Unfortunately this type of virus is not removable without a hard drive wipe and operating system reinstall.

We cannot caution enough about the importance of backing up your data and having a GOOD, PAID anti-virus program. There are many programs out there but we HIGHLY recommend ESET. Time and again it is proven to be a top ranking program to capture viruses "in the wild." Many programs protect against known viruses but the unknown are what often cause the most damage. ESET picks up on these potential threats and blocks your action so you don't get infected.

Of course, nothing is 100% effective so the potential is always there. It's also very important to be aware of your computer habits. Read before you click, visit trusted sites, make sure your spam blockers and filters are setup on your email, and most importantly don't open email attachments from unknown people. Even from known contacts, make sure the files they send are actually from them.

Windows 10 Release End of July!

July 06, 2015     |     By

The woes of Windows 8 will soon be a thing of the past. Microsoft has officially announced that Windows 10 will arrive July 29th, 2015! That's only 3 weeks away!! We'll say it again - it's FREE for Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 users!!!!!

If you have not upgraded to Windows 8.1, please do so. If you are running Windows 7 or 8.1 and have all your current updates, you will have a notification in the lower right corner to reserve a copy of Windows 10. It is an official, safe popup put out through Microsoft. You will have a year from July 29th to upgrade FOR FREE to Windows 10! This is certainly something to take advantage of from Microsoft.

Some key features of Windows 10:

  • Classic start menu is back
  • Faster startup
  • Very customizable and personal
  • Compatible with programs you use
  • Built-in browser called Microsoft Edge
  • Built-in assistant called Cortana - think OK, Google or Siri

The best way to explain Windows 10 is a combination of Windows 7 and 8. Apps will still be there but it will be easier to navigate and find what you need, especailly with Cortana working with you. Check out the official Microsoft Windows 10 page to see more and watch a video:
